Thursday: 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
The responsible janitor of the dormitory will check the room inventory with you and make an inventory list. Please check carefully that everything actually works, nothing is damaged or missing. The list will be signed afterwards. Contact, address and telephone number of the janitor responsible for the respective house can be found on the website of Studierendenwerk Dortmund.
You must also collect your keys from the respective janitor and return them there after moving out. If you lose your key, you will have to pay a fine of €110.
Move in and move out
You can move in only 2 to 5 days after the beginning of the lease, because your room is still being cleaned for you in the first days.
You may only move in and out on weekdays (Monday through Friday) and not on weekends or holidays (e.g. 3 October, Easter and Christmas).
If you move in and your first rental day falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or a public holiday, you must wait until the next business day to move in. Accordingly, take care of a short-term overnight accommodation. Here you will find the most important information about moving in provided by Studierendenwerk Dortmund.
You must move out on the last working day before the end of your lease. For example, if your lease ends on a weekend or a Friday, you must move out on Thursday. If your lease ends on a Wednesday, you must move out on Tuesday. You must hand in the keys to the janitor. He will check your room afterwards. Do not forget to deregister at the City of Dortmund if you will be leaving Germany (at Bürgerdienste or Bürgerdienste International - depending on your nationality). Here you can find the most important information about moving out from Studierendenwerk Dortmund.

Search for shared apartments
If you would like to live in a shared apartment with other students, then shared apartments (WGs) are a perfect option! They offer attractive and affordable living spaces and apartments in Dortmund and the surrounding area, while you meet friends for life, have fun together, also learn new foreign languages or deepen the existing language skills and much more! Here is something for everyone! In Germany, many students live in shared apartments (WG) to share the cost of rent. When you live in a WG, you usually share a kitchen and bathroom with other people and have your own bedroom. Renting a room in a shared apartment is often cheaper than paying for an entire apartment on your own and usually at least furniture and utensils for the kitchen are already available, so you do not have to buy these things then. Nevertheless, you should also make your own contribution and bring something to the WG. Usually you only need the furniture for your bedroom and even there there is often the option to take over single pieces of furniture from the previous tenant or to buy them for a small amount.
Following a list of online platforms where you can find many offers of shared apartments and more:
www.hochschulwerk.de
www.host-a-fan.de
www.salzundbrot.com
www.studenten-wg.de
www.studentenwohnungsmarkt.de
www.wg-gesucht.de
www.wg-welt.de
www.zimmer-im-revier.de
www.zwischenmiete.de
Of course, there are many more providers - so browse the internet, but also pay attention to notice boards in the buildings of Fachhochschule Dortmund and ask your fellow students - sometimes they are also looking for flatmates or know other students who are looking for a flatmate.
Application for shared apartments
Your application should include the following information:
- Name
- Age
- Country of origin
- Study program and university
- E-mail address
- Mobile phone number
- Secondary job or other type of income
- Information about your language skills
- Attitude towards pets
- Information whether you smoke
- Possible pieces of furniture or appliances you could bring with you to the shared apartment, such as a washing machine, a dryer or a TV, etc.
We advise you to write your application in German. If you write your application in English, you should indicate that you are learning German or would like to learn German in the future. This will make communication easier. But maybe your roommates can also benefit from your language skills - for example, by teaching you English or another foreign language and vice versa? This can also be an advantage for everyone.
After sending your application, make sure your mobile phone is turned on and you are easy to reach in case you are called. If you are invited to a viewing appointment, be sure to respond immediately. You are probably not the only person looking for a room and there are probably other interested parties.
Things to know and other tips
Apartment search
In addition to the options for finding accommodation mentioned above, it is worth taking a look at the notice boards at the various locations of Fachhochschule Dortmund and in the university buildings.
You can also find what you are looking for in the local newspapers. Examples:
Stadt-Anzeiger (free magazine)
Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ)
Ruhr Nachrichten (RN)
Westfälische Rundschau (WR)
If you are not able to find a suitable apartment in Dortmund, it is also worth looking in neighboring cities, such as Herne, Witten, Herdecke, Schwerte, Essen, Gelsenkirchen or Bochum. Thanks to the good transport connections in the Ruhr region and the student ticket, it is easy to commute from anywhere.
Furnishing
In Germany, it is common for apartments to be rented unfurnished. Some apartment exchanges give the option to search for furnished apartments. Important: If an apartment is not explicitly advertised as furnished, it is usually not furnished and does not have kitchen furniture.
However, you can buy second-hand furniture at a reasonable price - either through notices on bulletin boards or in newspapers, in special second-hand stores, at flea markets and on the Internet. The choice is enormous.
Service charges
As a rule, a basic rent is stated in the apartment advertisements. In addition, you have to pay additional costs (water, heating, electricity, telephone/internet connection and broadcasting fee).
