Student Dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund


There are 10 dormitories and residential complexes which are supervised by the Studierendenwerk Dortmund. If you would like to get a room in one the them, you need to fill out an application form online. If a place is available, you will be informed via email and need to confirm that offer.
After you application you will be first enrolled to a waiting list and you will receive an e-mail every four weeks asking you if you are still interested in room at the chosen dormitory. Please confirm your interest within the named deadline or inform the Studierendenwerk that you do not need a room there anymore. Should you not confirm your interest within the deadline, your application will be deleted from the waiting list.
Since the dormitories are really popular the waiting period can be up to 12 months. Therefore, we advise you to apply for a room before leaving for Germany and check also other possibilities on our websites.

Important Information about your Online Application for a Room at Studierendenwerk Dortmund ↓

Applications for a room in the dormitory of Studierendenwerk Dortmund will be only accepted if done online. A complete application consists of these data:

  • Your personal data, incl. E-mail address
  • Preferred housing (single apartment, shared flat, etc.)
  • Desired dormitory
  • Desired move-in date
  • Your home address
  • Your student status
  • If necessary: disability certificate
  • passport photo

Important:

After submitting the online application, you will receive a confirmation link via e-mail regarding your application. Please confirm this link within the named deadlines, otherwise your application will not be considered! Also check your spam folder!

Waiting list:

Please confirm your interest within the named deadline or inform the Studierendenwerk that you do not need a room there anymore.

Should you not confirm your interest within the deadline, your application will be deleted from the waiting list.

Afterwards - in case you would like to get a room - you would have to apply from the very beginning and wait again.

If the Studierendenwerk Dortmund can offer you a room - you will be informed by e-mail and must confirm that you are accepting their offer within the named deadlines.

The dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund are usually located very closely to the University and Fachhochschule Dortmund. Depending on the size and furnishing of the rooms the costs vary between 181€ to 375€. Here you can find a listing of all accommodation types of the Studierendenwerk Dortmund. Rental Contract ↓

The rental contract needs to be signed at the Studierendenwerk during the open office hours:

Inventory List & Service Hours from Janitors ↓


The janitor responsible for your dormitory will check your room's inventory with you and make an inventory list according to it. You will need to sign the inventory list so please make sure and check, that everything is working properly and every item on the list is actually there.

Moving in and out ↓

Please read the following information concerning your move in and out of the dormitory carefully and come to our office in case of any uncertainties! The following pieces of information are very important!

MOVING IN:

Students can only move in on a working day. If your rental contract starts on Saturday, Sunday or on a holiday you have to wait till the first working day to move in. Please take care of a short time accommodation till you can move into your dormitory room.

MOVING OUT:

You have to move out of the dormitory on the last working day of the month on which your rental contract ends.

This means that if your rental contract ends on a Saturday or Sunday you already have to move out of your room on Friday before.

Please contact the janitor so that he can check if everything is fine with your room and give him the keys back.

Keep in mind that you should de-register at the city of Dortmund (at the Bürgerdienste or Bürgerdienste International - depending on your nationality) if you leave Germany.

Subleasing the room ↓

You are usually not allowed to sublease or live under a sublease agreement in the rooms of the Studierendenwerk but there are some exceptions, e.g. when you make a semester abroad. You can only do it with an official authorisation, agreement and a contract of Studierendenwerk Dortmund. Please inform yourself directly at Studierendenwerk regarding that issue. Keys ↓

Usually the keys should be picked up directly at the janitors office. When you move out you must give the keys back to the janitor as well.

Should you get a room in a dormitory please take good care of your keys. In case you lose them you will have to pay
a 110 € fine!
