Deregistration and Re-registration at the Citizen Services (Bürgerdienste in Dortmund)

In addition to the registration it is also compulsory in Germany to de-register (Abmeldung) with the responsible citizen services - in Dortmund at the Bürgerdienste or Bürgerdienste International) when you go back to your home country. You also must re-register (Ummeldung) in case you change your address within the same city. In case you move to a new city - you must register there and will be automatically de-registered from your old address.

De-registration (Abmeldung)

A de-registration is required if you will not move into any new apartment in Germany after moving out of your current apartment. This is e.g. the case when you leave Germany permanently and want go back to your home country or move to any other foreign country or you want to give up your secondary residence in Germany.

How can you de-register? You have 3 possibilities:

1.  Personally - with your ID-card or your Passport

2.  Another person can de-register you - with a copy of your passport/ID-card and a power of attorney from you

The deregistration is possible the earliest one week before moving out, it must be done within two weeks after the departure at the Citizen Services - in Dortmund at any of the Bürgerdienste or Bürgerdienste International.

Re-Registration (Ummeldung)

In case you are already registered in Dortmund and change your accommodation within Dortmund you need to re-register at the Citizen Services (Bürgerdienste) of your choice or at Bürgerdienste International.
