About the project

The automobile industry is characterized by highly fragmented development work. Within this development network, companies in the supply industry in North Rhine-Westphalia are increasingly assuming the role of system integrator because product complexity means that developing all system components in-house is no longer possible. This especially applies for innovative vehicle concepts in the area of electromobility.

Because of the extensive process landscape, there is a need in this context to safeguard the quality of the development work for integrated systems. Particularly in the area of electromobility, development processes and standards for ensuring functional safety (including, among others, ISO 26262) are very important and represent a major proportion of the costs. The introduction of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) facilitates the holistic system development of complex mechatronic products and offers the potential for more effective quality assurance.

The objective of the project is to set up a modular electromobility platform that supports the validation and verification of software and hardware components in the sense of a hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop platform in the MBSE development process. To this end, the platform comprises a drive train with a motor, battery, and power electronics as well as an electronic control unit. The system’s configuration, test management and data logging, along with input of the test stimuli, are integrated in the MBSE tool chain. The system will also be usable for training purposes, in teaching, and as a demonstration platform, e.g., for trade exhibitions. Project results are thus:

  • A modular laboratory setup with drive train
  • A corresponding electronic control unit with sensors
  • The integration of software tools for control and configuration
  • Training manuals, tutorials, and examples/demonstration models as online materials
