3. General Information on Data Processing

Fachhochschule Dortmund collects and uses personal data of its visitors only to the extent necessary to provide a functional website as well as our contents and services in accordance with a legal basis.

 

Legal Basis for Processing Personal Data

As far as we obtain the consent of the person concerned for processing their personal data, section 6 (1) letter a of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) serves as the legal basis for processing personal data.

As far as processing personal data is necessary to fulfill a legal obligation to which Fachhochschule Dortmund is subject, section 6 (1) letter c GDPR serves as the legal basis.

In the event that vital interests of the person concerned or of another natural person make it necessary to process personal data, section 6 (1) letter d GDPR serves as the legal basis.

If the processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of an official authority conferred on Fachhochschule Dortmund, section 6 (1) letter e GDPR serves as the legal basis for the processing. If the processing is necessary to safeguard a legitimate interest of Fachhochschule Dortmund or a third party and the interests, fundamental rights and freedoms of the party concerned do not outweigh the former interest, section 6 (1) letter f GDPR serves as the legal basis for the processing. This does not apply as far as Fachhochschule Dortmund acts in a sovereign capacity during the processing of such data.

Storage Period of Personal Data

Personal data of the person concerned will only be stored by us as long as the purpose of the storage exists. If the processing is based on the consent of the person concerned, the data will only be stored as long until the person concerned revokes their consent, unless there is another legal basis for the processing.

Right to Rectification and Deletion of Personal Data

The person concerned has the right to demand that we rectify incorrect personal data concerning them without delay. The person concerned also has the right to demand that we delete personal data concerning them without delay as soon as the purpose for which it was collected no longer applies or if the processing is based on the consent of the person concerned, if the person concerned withdraws their consent and there is no other legal basis for the processing.


The personal data of the person concerned will also be deleted if they object to the processing in accordance with section 21 (1) GDPR and there are no overriding legitimate reasons for the processing or if the personal data have been processed unlawfully or if the deletion was provided for in regulations to which Fachhochschule Dortmund is subject in order to fulfill a legal obligation by the European or national legislator.

However, the personal data will not be deleted in the aforementioned cases, if the processing of personal data is necessary to enable Fachhochschule Dortmund to fulfill a legal obligation imposed by the European or national legislator or if the processing is carried out to fulfill a task of Fachhochschule Dortmund that is in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority delegated to Fachhochschule Dortmund or if continued storage of personal data is necessary to assert, exercise or defend legal claims.

Right to Withdraw Consent

If the processing of personal data is based on the consent of the person concerned, the latter may withdraw their consent at any time. The processing of personal data carried out up to the withdrawal shall remain lawful despite the withdrawal.

Right to Information

The person concerned has the right to demand a confirmation of Fachhochschule Dortmund whether personal data concerning them is being processed. If this is the case, the person concerned has the right to information what personal data is being processed and for what purpose. In addition, they have the right to information on the duration of the planned storage of the data or which criteria are used to determine the storage duration.

 

4. Statistical Collection, Matomo

 

Scope of the Data Processing

We use the open source software application Matomo (formerly PIWIK) on our website to analyze the surfing behavior of our users. The software sets cookies on the computer of its users. If individual pages of our website are accessed, the following data is stored:

  • Two bytes of the IP address of the accesing user system
  • The website accessed
  • Information on the browser type and version used
  • The operation system of the user
  • The website from which the user has accessed our website (referrer)
  • Date and time of the access
  • The supages accessed from the website visited
  • The time spent on the website
  • How many times the website was accessed
  • Websites accessed by the user system via our website

The application solely runs on the servers of our website. Personal data of the users is only stored on the servers of our website. We will not pass on the data to third parties.

We collect and store data for statistical and optimization purposes on this website using the web tracking tool Matomo. Matomo uses cookies - text files that enable us to analyze how the website is used, when stored on your computer. For this purpose, the usage information generated by the cookie (including your anonymized IP address) is transferred to our server and stored. This function can be deactivated in the following paragraph ( visit 4.1 ).

The information generated by the cookie is used solely for statistical purposes and to improve our website and server. Your IP address is anonymized and cannot be traced back to you. It will not be passed on to third parties.

The software is set up so that the IP addresses are not saved entirely; instead two bytes of the IP address are masked. In this way, it is no longer possible to assign the shortened IP address to the accessing computer.

When a website is accessed, data regarding this process is stored. In detail, the following information will be stored: page title, search term (that leads the visitors to the page), search engines, page URL, number of pages visited, location of the visitor (country), provider, browser, operating system, screen resolution, browser plug-ins, visiting hours, visiting duration, entry pages, exit pages, downloads, orphan pages.

4.1 Objection to Data Storage

As a user, you have the option to refuse tracking by Matomo at any time.

If users have activated the option "I do not want to be tracked" in their browser, no data of this user will be saved by Matomo.

Attention: If you delete your cookies, the opt-out cookie will also be deleted and you may have to reactivate it.

4.2 Legal Basis for Processing

The legal basis for processing users' personal data is Section 6 (1) letter f GDPR.

4.3 Purpose of Processing

Processing users' personal data enables us to analyze the surfing behavior of our users. By evaluating the data obtained, we are able to compile information on the use of the individual components of our website. This helps us to constantly improve our website and its usability.

4.4 Duration of Personal Data Storage

We will delete the data as soon as it is no longer required for our recording purposes. Cookies are saved on the user's computer and are transmitted by the user to our site. Therefore, you as a user, have full control over the use of cookies. By changing the settings in your Internet browser, you can deactivate or restrict the transmission of cookies. Already stored cookies can be deleted at any time. This can also be done automatically. If the cookies for our website are deactivated, it may not be possible to use all the functions of the website to their full extent.
